Pendimethalin is a PBT substance (persistent, bioaccumulating, and toxic) in that DT50 >120 days, BCF >2000, and NOEC for an aquatic organism (algea) was <0.01 mgt!. The final regulatory action is based on estimated concentrations of the chemical in the environment taking into account the prevailing conditions in Norway. The risk evaluation concluded that, on the basis of the results of modelled exposure there were unacceptable risks to aquatic organisms. Modelling estimations indicated that application (according to good agriculture practice) of pendimethalin would lead to predicted surface water concentration of 12 ugll, which resulted in very high risk for aqautic organisms (especially algea where EC50 = 5 ugll). In addition, pendimethalin was detected in rain water collected in Sweden, which indicates potential for long range transport.
